XRP Wallets: How to Store XRP Safely

"Wallet" is a slightly misleading word — no wallet actually stores your XRP. The XRP Ledger itself holds the balance; what a wallet actually stores is the private key that proves you control a given address and lets you sign transactions. Understanding that distinction makes the rest of this decision much simpler.

The three broad categories

Exchange custody

When you buy XRP on an exchange and leave it there, the exchange holds the private key on your behalf. You have a claim on the balance, not direct control of it.

Software wallets (hot wallets)

An app — mobile, desktop, or browser extension — that generates and stores your private key on an internet-connected device, giving you direct control of your XRP Ledger address.

Hardware wallets (cold storage)

A dedicated physical device that generates and stores your private key offline, only connecting to sign a specific transaction.

A reasonable approach for most people

This is general information, not personalized security or financial advice. Wallet security is entirely your own responsibility once you hold your own keys — research any specific wallet software or hardware thoroughly, and verify you're downloading official software from the vendor's real domain before installing anything.
